"An Bothán" is the Irish for "The Shed". An Bothán began its existence as the home of the O' Shea Family, my mother-in-law's family in the late 1800s. When the family built a new house nearby in the 1950s the house was then used as a milking shed. Over the years the house had fallen into disrepair until 2002 when we began the project of restoring it to a habitable space once again. We hope that we have managed to marry old charm with new modern comforts. Outside there is a seating area and this is a real sun-trap when the sun is shining. Our closest beach is only a 5 min. stroll from the cottage, at Muiríoch. It is a long, sandy beach wonderful for walking, safe for swimming and ideal for building sand castles. This is only one of many beaches in the area. At Ballydavid pier (approx. 10 min. walk) there are two smaller beaches which are also very popular.
Our wish for you when you holiday in our cottage is that you will gain "suaimhneas" a Gaelic word which means "peace, tranquillity, quietness, relaxation".
Further details indoors
The cottage is fully equipped with all modern appliances to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The main double bedroom is en suite and has a view of "An Fear Marbh" island. Soak those aching muscles after a hard day's hill-walking in the roll-top cast iron bath, in the main bathroom. The main living space has high ceilings and exposed beams and also contains a wood-burning stove for any cool evenings. The loft area has proved very popular with guests in the past as a chill-out area or indeed a den for the children where they can play games.
