Description from owner

Description

La Forge is located only 7 miles from the heart of Saumur yet situated in tranquil rural location. This makes it an ideal location for those interested in exploring the many historic and even prehistoric sites that are found throughout the Loire. It also lies at the centre of the fabulous Loire wine area with delicious sparkling whites; delicate rosés and spicey reds.
The area is good for cycling and walking with quiet country lanes and the national forest only 500 metres away. Riverside water parks with beaches are within easy reach. The nearby town 1 mile away has a small supermarket, bakers, butcher, bars, hairdressers, garage etc.

Further details

Please note that as well as providing all bed and table linen we also supply swimming towels.

Pool open from May to September.

Further details indoors

The restored forge is comfortably furnished. Fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer. The dining area gives onto mature south-facing garden accessed through French doors. An open-plan kitchen-diner/salon with informal seating has views over the 12 x 6 m heated pool. There is a TV that receives English channels. Upstairs there are 2 twin bedrooms with washbasins, a wet room with shower and a separate WC. The forge has it’s own garage and a terrace overlooking the garden.

Further details outdoors

The sheltered 12 x 6 meter heated pool is situated in the walled courtyard and provides the perfect place to take a languid dip. It is the ideal spot to catch up with holiday reading, bask in the sun or nod off on the comfortable sunbeds provided.
There is fun for all the family in our games room which has table tennis & table football. The games room leads out to 2.5 hectares of grounds. Here we have a communal seating area where you can sit, glass of wine in hand, and watch the stunning sunsets. A large section of the land has been set aside for general recreation - Football, boules & croquet can all be played here. For the little ones there are swings, a seesaw and a slide they can play on. A selection of bikes is available for guests to borrow for small trips into town for a loaf, perhaps, or for longer trips around the quiet lanes in the beautiful surrounding countryside.

“First rate accommodation in a great location.”

Reviewed 12 Sep 2015

We enjoyed an excellent week with our 2 dogs at la forge. It was clear from the outset that Mark and Judy have carefully and thoughtfully constructed an excellent, client led gite business in a great edge of village location. Both gites are finished to an impressively high specification whilst separate entrances and enclosed gardens offer welcome privacy. The shared pool is a generous size and there is much to see and do around and about. All amenities are within easy reach as is the beautiful town of Saumur.. Highly recommended.

Response from the owner We are really pleased to see from your review how much you enjoyed yourselves here. It was a real pleasure to meet you both, as well as, of course, your fine, well-behaved dogs. It is always a pleasure to have such a positive response from dog-owners. The separate fenced and enclosed gardens with their automatic gates make having dogs here a practical proposition and we are pleased to see you take good advantage of the huge range of wonderful walks that surround the property. Our Yorkie – Caillou – still spends much of his day playing with the toy you kindly gave him!! We are grateful you appreciated the high standard we have aimed for in the gîtes. Our own experience in years past of staying in substandard accommodation furnished with musty caste-offs convinced us that a different mentality was required – one which placed the emphasis on providing the best possible experience for guests – hence also the large heated pool. We are very fortunate to have gîtes in an area that provides so much in the way of attractions. It is good to know how much you enjoyed Saumur with its quirky architecture and we hope to have the pleasure of you visiting us again in the future.

“Lovely area ideal and comfortable accommodation”

Reviewed 11 Aug 2015

Great tips from the owners as to the best places to eat and visit. We even had a dental emergency covered due to the owners network of local contacts.

Response from the owner Thank you so much for the review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday in our area. I hope the teeth are ok now!!

“An ideal base for exploring the Saumur area”

Reviewed 5 Oct 2012

We were impressed both by the first class accommodation at La Forge and by the warm welcome we received from Judy and Mark. We had a great time exploring the area and wish we could have stayed longer. If you are searching for a really comfortable place to stay in the area with a high standard of amenities you need look no further than La Forge.

“A wonderful relaxing holiday in fantastic accommodation”

Reviewed 23 Jul 2012

La forge was very clean, spacious and well equipped to meet the needs and expectations of our family. Judy, Mark and their family went out of their way to be welcoming and friendly and gave lots of good advice on what to see and do in the area. The swimming pool was especially welcome after a hot day sightseeing. We enjoyed the wine tasting that Mark kindly arranged and took us to and we also found the troglodite caves and chateaus very interesting. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday, with good accommodation in an area that offers plenty of things to entertain you then La Forge should tick all your boxes. We would recommend it to anyone. One word of warning the local bread shop sells absolutely fantastic cakes so if you are on a diet please avoid at all costs - we couldn't resist.

“Peaceful, relaxing and friendly retreat in a beautiful location”

Reviewed 9 Jun 2012

We had a two hour delay on our journey due to a RTA at Rouen and were hot, tired and hungry when we arrived; Judy and Mark were there to greet us with a lovely warm welcome and a (more importantly) a good bottle of red. Just what the doctor ordered! they had also introduced us to their local caterer, by e-mailing a menu, and the food was waiting when we arrived, absolutely delicious and very good value for money. Later in the week we met one of their friends, a local wine producer, Jerome; he was absolutely charming and his wine was good too. The week went too quickly, despite the poor weather. The zoo at Doue is not to be missed and suits all ages, we took our 12 year old and my 79yr old mother, and the day was enjoyed by all. Le Panorama cafe overlooking the Chateau at Saumur provides hearty snacks, good service and fabulous views of the Loire. There are so many stunning Chateau to visit we will need to go back to see them all; thats my excuse! The weekly market in Bourgeuil is worth a visit as is the Pizzeria/Creperie. The pool and games room were a bonus and much appreciated by our son Adam as was the companionship of the Porter family crew.

“Great autumn break”

Reviewed 1 Oct 2011

The location and standard of the accommodation was great. Judy and Mark are on site, and are great hosts. There is so much to do around the property, with the forest within walking distance, and the Loire vineyards a short drive. I would not hesitate to return, either on our own, or taking the additional property with family. The only downside was the local vet, who charged an extortionate price for the pet passport. But we know for next time!

“You relax immedietly amongst wonderful surroundings with super facilities for all the family”

Reviewed 5 Jun 2011

The two gites are well situated for access to the pool and seeting areas. There is a games room and large open space which was ideal for our teenages. The pool is a good size with plenty of seeting inclosed by a railed white fence for safety, The kitchen was well equipped with a dishwasher, good sized fridge and cooker. The bedrooms were spacious with excellent on-suite facilities. Spaciuos living area with double doors leading out to the garden. The shops are close by in Allonnes, you can cycle or 2 mins by car. The owners live on site and are very friendly. They wellcomed us with drinks on the first evening and went out of there way to make us feel relaxed, helping us with bikes advise on where to visit and eat. There are local vineyards to visit, a super local market, many wonderful Chateau's and gardens, a brilliant zoo, wonderfull woody walks and Saumur with its shops cafe's and impressive Chateau.

“Good small Gite, perfect as a base for exploring”

Reviewed 23 May 2011

This gite is on the small side but the most has been made of the available space. It has two good size twin bedrooms with washing facilities and a large wet-room on the first floor while the ground floor is one large open-plan kitchen/living room. The gite is in a lovely country setting with shared access to a large heated swimming pool and plenty of space for the kids to run around in safety.

“Relaxing family holiday in Loire”

Reviewed 22 May 2011

Great place for a family to locate in Saumur area. Host family are very welcoming and good at providing to-do ideas. Gite is comfortable and has good facilities including a swimming pool and a barn play area for the kids. The area around is good for cycling and the roads are quiet. The local village has a pleasant patisserie and there is a local market which includes a fish stall. A boat trip down the Loire was lovely and we also enjoyed the tank museum in Saumur. Vulture feeding time at the nearby zoo provided a novel day out, if not a little gory. There are lots of small towns near by with lots of good value restaurants to explore - we like the L'Ancre Bleu in Bourgueil on market day.
