Flour Cask Bay Retreat is an affordable, totally solar and wind powered eco retreat situated on rolling hills near the south coast of Kangaroo Island.
Built in 2006/07, the retreat offers panoramic views and a real wildlife experience. Bush walking around the property enables the viewing of many varieties of wildflowers and wildlife. Kangaroos and wallabies can be seen from your balcony early morning or dusk. During the day you may see goannas or echidnas, or enjoy watching the many native birds, ranging from wrens to wedge tailed eagles.
Near access to a secluded beach you will be in awe of the rugged and pristine coastline, perhaps go beach fishing or swimming in the rock pools.

From the retreat you can see for miles, offering wonderful views of sunrises and sunsets. Being far away from the city lights, the skies at night are incredible for stargazing.

About the Island
Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third-largest island after Tasmania and Melville Island. It is 112 kilometres south-west of Adelaide at the entrance of Gulf St Vincent. At its closest point to the mainland, it is 13 kilometres offshore from Cape Jervis, on the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula in the state of South Australia. It is approximately 150kms long by 50kms at the widest point, with a population of only about 4,500. With so many places and attractions allow at least a few days to explore and enjoy this pristine environment.
Wildlife
Kangaroo Island has been described as “a zoo without fences” and offers a wonderful wilderness experience and adventure.
Kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, possums, seals, sea lions and goannas inhabit the island. Rabbits and foxes have never been introduced. Koalas can also be seen.
Bird watching is a delight with many species of aquatic and land birds all over the island.
The Coast
The coastline is spectacular, ranging from magnificent, wild, rugged beaches to calm coves suitable for swimming. The ocean is crystal clear and the sand is almost white turning the sea to shades of turquoise.
Kangaroo Island is noted for its great fishing and several fishing charters are available.
For the more adventurous, why not try a swim with the dolphins, a quad bike ride amongst the wildlife or ‘surf’ down the sand dunes at Little Sahara?
For those who prefer to stay on firm ground, viewing the seals at Admiral’s Arch or the endangered Australian Sea Lions at Seal Bay are not to be missed!
