Overlooking the Barrengarry Mountain-range,midway between the villages of Kangaroo Valley and Berry, this beautiful house is an oasis that we have found no one wants to leave. The property is located atop 7 acres of undisturbed rainforest that serves as an incredible amphitheatre for the rich birdsong of the Australian bush.
Lyra is a unique house, hand crafted from materials sourced from the property's surrounds. Much of the timber has been felled on-site and walls built from rocks and boulders found on the land. The kitchen ceiling linings had a previous life as the hard-working roof of the old Kangaroo Valley Hall and heralds its vintage marker stamps. The front living area with its glass roof panels delights through the seasons as a portal to the sky and the chance to spot the odd eagle overhead while lying on the lounge in front of the slow combustion wood fire (chosen for its efficient German engineering). The back living room is a cocoon of sofas for curling up into a good book or enjoying your favourite film on the large 65 inch LG OLED television. The mud brick and stone walls keeps the ambient temperature of the house wonderfully insulated from the heat of summer and the cold of winter. A reverse cycle air conditioner is located in the back living room to guarantee your comfort.
The beating heart of Lyra, however, emanates from her generous fully equipped kitchen and gorgeous outdoor entertaining area which operates as an open air living room with its large wood-fired pizza oven, dining table commissioned from the timbers of a Sydney wharf, mid-century cane lounges and vintage tartan blankets for snuggling up in in winter. Guests are sure to enjoy the deliciously heated outdoor spa and fire pit (bring your own wood or use fallen timber found on the property) where you can sit back and relax under the star lit sky.
Keen cooks themselves, the owners sought guidance from a chef on equipping the kitchen for guests; hence the comprehensive kitchen equipment including a thermal circulator, mix master, food processor, stick blender, spice grinders, hand mixer, cast iron stove top panini press, roasting and baking trays and tins and enough stainless steel bowls to order any cook's mis-en-place.The pantry has been thoughtfully stocked with herbs, spices, oils, sauces, vinegars and condiments from Asia through to the Middle East.
We have found that our guests adore the pizza oven and we have created a dedicated area for making pizza dough, bread and pasta which includes a complimentary store of strong flours, salt and yeast and useful bread and pizza making cookbooks. (pizza prep trays are in the large kitchen cupboard - don't forget to brush the base with polenta!)
The fridge is stocked with bottles of still and sparkling cold water that can be restocked using the soda stream. A Nespresso coffee machine is also provided (BYO coffee pods).
The details are clearly important to the owners who have also filled the kitchen with a bespoke collection of mid-century and vintage crockery and ceramics that have been lovingly collected over the years.
The property has three private bedrooms with the main downstairs bedroom having a queen bed and its own ensuite. The two upstairs bedrooms have a queen and a double bed and share the second bathroom. There is also a sofa bed with pull-out trundle in the upstairs bedroom that can accommodate 2 extra little ones (single bed duvets and extra pillows can be found in the cupboard but please bring your own single bed linen). There is an extra powder room off the back living room.
Bed linen is 5 star quality - 100% organic bamboo, cotton and French linen.
Each bed is equipped with electric blankets and 100% Australian wool blankets for the winter months plus 5 star quality duvets through the year. Hot water bottles are also included for those who enjoy old school warmth.
There is a ping pong table in the large shed for family competitions.
As custodians of Lyra we honour the environmental tradition upon which our home was created and endeavour to limit or eliminate single use plastics wherever possible exercising the discipline of thorough recycling. We ask our guests to please do the same. Reusable shopping bags are available in the kitchen for the odd shopping trip and we ask you to take home or recycle any plastics you may bring. We do not offer single portion items instead opting for communal pantry and bathroom basics which you are welcome to use.
Complimentary firewood is provided for use in the inside fire place and pizza oven. If you would like to enjoy the fire pit we do askthat only rough wood self-sourced from the property is used. Additional fire woodcan also be purchased from the petrol station and rural supplies store in Kangaroo Valley.
Finally: As a gesture of goodwill we inherited the previous owners' friendly middle-aged cat ("Fuffy"). Her bed is located in the wood shed and our sweet little friend might come and say hello during your stay.
