The Old House (Ty Hen) is unique - described by one guest as the most unusual place they had ever stayed in. The cottage dates back to at least 1834 and is one of the few cottages to escape the regeneration scheme in Blaenau still retaining its lovely old sash windows and original Welsh slate roof. Internally it retains a lot of the original features including a rare Welsh oven - unfortunately not in use. It is also interesting as it's one of the few cottages in Blaenau actually built of slate - which is what the town is famous for. The cottage is a little bit of Blaenau Ffestiniogs history and is mentioned twice on the Cadw (Welsh Governments Historic Environment Service) website.
It consists of a lounge/diner, kitchen, bathroom , double and single bedroom.
The lounge/diner has two double settees, dining table for four and a FreeSat 32" Panasonic Viera TV + Amazon Firestick with DVD player. There is a small library of DVD's, books and games available.
The kitchen is well equipped with an electric cooker, fridge with icebox, microwave, slow cooker and sandwich toaster.
The bathroom, unfortunately due to the sloping ceiling, has no shower but there is a bath with a hand held mixer shower and unlimited hot water available.
The single bedroom is a very unusual shape with two pretty little windows and the double bedroom is quite large with its own wash basin but be aware there is a step down into it but a night light is provided if required.
Be aware, there are low doorways, sloping ceilings in some rooms and steep stairs which all add to the charm of the property.
Parking is available in a public parking bay about 5yds past the cottage and there is access to private enclosed parking, for 1 car only, if required.
The cottage has gas central heating and WiFi.
It is excellently situated in the Rhiwbryfdir area of Blaenau Ffestiniog in a very quiet road. Turn right out of the front door and you are within a ten minute walk of the town centre with all the shops and eateries and the Ffestiniog Railway. Also within ten minutes walk are the Llechwedd Slate Caverns with the Victorian Mine Tour and the Quarry Explorer. This is also the home of the Zip World complex with Zip World Titan, Bounce Below and Zip World Caverns. The Antur Stiniog Centre with its excellent mountain bike trails can be found here as well. Turn left out of the front door, across the railway track and you are out onto a path leading straight into the mountains.
Blaenau Ffestiniog has a good selection of supermarkets open until late at night and to eat out there are several cafes, an excellent Indian Restaurant, a good Chinese takeaway and a fish and chip shop. It even has it's own little cinema which opened recently.
The town is ideally located for visiting places of local interest with the Italiniate village of Portmeirion and the fabulous Black Rock Sands a short drive away. There are plenty of castles and National Trust properties to explore - guides to which are to be found in the cottage. Snowdon and the charming town of Betws y Coed are not far away. The cottage is a great base for exploring the area.
Allergies - please note, the cottage is occasionally used by dogs. Also, there are feather duvets and pillows.
