Bremen takes its place in the ranks of the once mighty European Hanseatic cities. Equally still, both Bremen and Hamburg are proud of their historic harbours. Bremen is positioned just after Hamburg as the Countries' second largest port for foreign trade. The City's emblems, as every child knows, are the 'Bremer Stadtmusikanten' or the Bremen Town Musicians from Grimm's Fairytales. By the Town Hall you will find a statue of those animals (a Donkey, a Dog, a Cat and a Rooster). Supposedly touching the Donkey should bring you a bit of luck!
Another main attraction is the Roland Statue that stands proud at 10 meters high in the market square. Next to this, Bremen Cathedral, that still gloriously watches over the former harbour city. South of the market you will find the 'Schnoorviertal' a district that remains as it was centuries ago. An area that is full of narrow, winding streets and old timber houses. On the edge of the city you will find the former city wall that is now used a recreation park.
Along the 'Schlachte' or the waterside promenade you will find the maritime nightlife. This approximately 600 meter long promenade follows the River Weser and is a popular hangout for locals. Here you will discover both on the promenade and on the water a wide variety of bars, restaurants and theatres. It is worth your while visiting this area during the day because you will find many events going on and this is the starting point for many boat tours. The 'Schlachte' is a must-see and must-do during your visit to Bremen.
