Looking for a carefree vacation holiday in a medieval Italian hamlet (Borgo) far from the hassle and hustle of large cities like Rome? That would put you in the real side of Italy among the rolling countryside of Calitri in the eastern edge of Campania. It is a place still innocent of tourists, untainted by globalization. Our home, just off a "borgo" main avenue (Via Pasquale Barrelli) from Piazza della Repubblica (free parking), goes back centuries, as evidenced by its name ... “Casa della Feritoia” or “House of the Arrow Slot”. Yes, "arrow slot", as in narrow opening through which you could shoot arrows at attackers! Casa della Feritoia was completely renovated in 2007 , with updates since, and consists of a large two bedroom, single level home located high on a mountainside in the medieval section of Calitri. Entrance is from a street level, semi-private courtyard just past a tunnel. Radiating from a combined kitchen/dining area are two bedrooms. The large guest room, that accommodates 4, also has a living room area with TV/DVD and couches. Open the balcony doors in the over-sized master bedroom and step into the sounds of the medieval village. A recently added rooftop terrace (added in 2014) with umbrella, gas grill, patio table and chairs (summer months) opens this home to an astounding panorama over the cascading rooftops of homes farther below on the mountainside. Its spacious kitchen/dining area includes the conveniences of a gas stovetop with oven, large refrigerator with freezer, sink, microwave, complete kitchenware, and all the accoutrements you might need to snack, lunch, or host guests. A kitchen table with four chairs, a recessed cabinet for dishes/glassware storage, cubbyhole bookcase, and a CD/BT/radio for your listening entertainment completes this area. Modern Calitri is a short (5-10 minute) walk away. Not available during winter months (1 Nov - 30 Apr).
