VILLA BELLAVISTA AND THE ITALIAN AND FRENCH RIVIERAS

(overview of the region's delights)

Villa BellaVista in Liguria is ideally placed to explore the charm, excitement and contrasts of the twin Rivieras and the surrounding beautiful countryside.

Local Italian beach towns of Bordighera and San Remo compete with their French counterparts Menton, Cap Martin, Monte Carlo, Monaco and Cap d'Ail.

Liguria itself, home of Julius Caesar, and known for fine olive oil, flowers and its streetmarkets is replete with charming valleys, Roman and medieval villages - Dolce Acqua, Apricale and Pigna famous for its Spa, (and for some reason, its white beans!) to name just three picturesque villages crying out for a visit.

And there is something about the light that kept painters like Monet enraptured for years.

Wine lovers will be in heaven - here you can sample the local white wines Vermentino and Pigato and the local red Rossese and then compare them with the spectacular Piemonte wines including Barbarescos and Barolos.

And if you are brave - why not fuel a debate on the best qualities of the Italian versus French wines.

Not surprisingly there is food to match; from simple flavourful pizzas to seaside fish restaurants to country restaurants with a greater variety of meat and game dishes - and always accompanied by fine olive oil.

From there we soar into gourmet territory!

Villa Bellavista is directly at the convergence of the Liguria Alta Via hiking trails (numbers one and two) which lead into the lower Alps or in the direction of Genoa and Portofino.

It is perfect for walkers and nature lovers. Occasionally falcons swoop over Villa Bellavista and soar above the Mediterranean before returning to their lower alpine base.

And trains can take you further afield exploring both the coast and the mountains including the resort town of Limone on the way to which you weave in and out of Italian and French villages on an old smugglers trail.
