1 big bedroom with private shower room in an unspoilt rural village 3 hours SE of Manila. Close to Mabitac and Pagsanjan. Good centre to visit Laguna & the Pacific coast, or to chill out & enjoy traditional rural life in great scenery, or just a stop on a journey to The South
Matalatala is a village surrounded by green nature, either rice fields on the plain, or lush hill and mountain slopes covered in abundant natural greenery. Use the house as a base for touring the region, as a place to relax and unwind, or as a staging point to rest after the "escape" from Metro Manila on a longer journey to the South.
This is a family home for me (Eva) and my two children (14 and 10). For rent is the Terrace bedroom (23sq m) with double bed and private shower room. You have free access to all of the ground floor (sitting room, TV, dining room, kitchen, laundry) and to our WIFI throughout the house, or the PC with wired Internet broadband connection
The room is perfect for 2 people sharing a double bed.
We can provide an extra mattress in the room for extra guests (e.g. your kids). For extra guests we charge 300php/person/night, excluding babies and children under 6 years old who are free. There is no baby bed, so please bring your own as necessary. Please pay these extra fees directly to me on arrival
The room has an electric fan. The showers are fed by water pumped from our own well, and do not have water heaters. The majority of rural Filipinos do not even have access to a shower! For those of you for whom a cold shower is too much of a shock, the alternative is a bucket shower - a large plastic bucket of cold with a kettle of boiling water added! After that, most people find the shower water rather bearable and very refreshing!
The house was built in 2004, and the inside is decorated to +90% - (almost!) everything that should work does! We will only finish the last 10% of the interior decoration once the exterior is 100% waterproof - something we are getting to slowly, but not helped by all the recent bad weather! The false ceilings are as yet unpainted in places, but their natural wood finish makes them not all that obtrusive. The doors and furniture are all locally made, and are sturdy and functional without being 5-star designer finish! The upstairs terrace has a table and chairs for sitting out in the morning in the sun, or in the evening for the cool fresh air and then star gazing!
All windows, doors, and the terrace are now protected by grills for extra security
During the school week, the kids and I are up very early. Downstairs is virtually for the renters' exclusive use from 7am until after 4pm (apart from 30 minutes at midday for simple lunch for the younger one), when the family evening meal is prepared. Kids are off to bed just after 8pm, leaving the downstairs free for guests.
Kitchen access allows you to prepare your own evening meals if you want, or arrange with me in advance and I'll provide you with a cooked evening meal, for 300php per person
For breakfast, either do your own, or tell me in advance and I'll prepare you a complementary continental breakfast (home-made bread a specialty without being promised every day!) with Filipino dishes (rice and fish/meat) available. Eggs always available, up to you how you want them! Tea/coffee unlimited! It's so important to enjoy a long, relaxed breakfast!
You can always ask me to take you as guide to the Siniloan market (the closest big market, at 15 minutes by tricycle), to explore the local fresh fruit/veg/meat/fish market, the local non-food market, and the small supermarket.
You can also sample local traditional preparations, and of course the local spirit, lambanog! The house food has a strong western leaning, and has many western raw ingredients available, and amongst the best loose leaf tea (including Twinnings) in The Philippines!
Matalatala, the village where the house is situated, has many "sari sari" stores each selling a small range of products (fresh veg, tins, snacks, and booze). Best to shop in Siniloan, and use these sari sari stores in emergency only!
Pharmacies in Mabitac and Siniloan, doctors and hospital in Siniloan
The two children and I speak very good English (Tagalog as mother tongue!), and all are friendly and welcoming.
We have an Internet connection with WiFi throughout the house (thank you, Belen!).
Smokers welcome! But please smoke outside when it's good weather, and on the sheltered terrace if it's raining!
