'El Lentiscar' is a handsome two-towered villa built in 2007, nestled on a hillside, in a six thousand m² landscaped plot, with olive trees, five hundred m² of marble flagstones, a 4 x 10m private pool, outdoor kitchen/barbecue (local laws state this shouldn't be lit between April and September inclusive)/shower room/spare room, and spectacular views across the valley of the Quipar and Argos rivers to the town of Cehegín (pop. fifteen thousand) and the imposing 4,800+foot peaks above Caravaca de la Cruz. The main house is laid out on a spacious open plan, with a kitchen area, dining area, and living area with broad open fire, sofas and flatscreen TV. There is aircon in the lounge, kitchen and master bedroom. There is a large family bathroom, with shower/bath, vertical radiator, and a modernist ensuite to the master bedroom, which has French windows to the main patio/garden area (ideal for a midnight swim!). Up a winding staircase in the tower is a huge 8m x 8m suntrap terrace, sheltered on all four sides. The pool is looked after on a weekly basis through the summer, and has a large paved area with teak sun loungers on one side. It can be fenced if required. The garden has young apricot, peach, plum, cherry and almond trees, maturing pines, cypresses and olive trees, set in gravelled pathways around the main paved terracing. There are seating areas, decorative stone columns, and a fountain. The extremities of the plot merge into the natural earth and grasses of the hillside, which is known as 'La Muela.'
The property is wonderfully secluded, set a short way (400m) along a rutted road, with neighbouring plots, almost invisible, occupied by quiet and courteous local families. It is approximately a mile away from the charming medieval hilltop town of Cehegín, perhaps the most picturesque in all Murcia, which offers the full range of amenities--including excellent restaurants and retailers--in an unobstrusive way. Within 600m is the celebrated 'Via Verde ('The Green Way'), a haven for cyclists, walkers, joggers and strollers, which crosses the River Quipar on a spectacular viaduct, nestled under the equally famous ruins of the walled Romano-Visigoth city of Begastri.
Cehegín itself is 65km distant frm Murcia city, along a splendid little-used autovia (motorway/dual carriageway). Murcia is capital of the region (population four hundred and fifty thousand), which is well served by San Javier and Alicante airports. A range of Costa Calida beaches are within easy striking distance (1½ hours uncluttered drive) but a holiday at 'El Lentiscar' is for country lovers with modern tastes, not for beach-seekers. You'll probably need to speak a bit of Spanish, be confident with map-reading, and handling a left-hand drive hire car, to get here. When you do, we think you'll think it was worth it!
