From the owner

The picture postcard village of Cucugnan, with its working windmill, is set between two ancient castles in the Corbieres hills. This area of the south of France, the Languedoc-Roussillon, is famous for sunshine, wine, and the castles of the Cathares; it is a region of wild beauty and history, yet with the beaches of the Mediterranean an hour's drive away. There are three good restaurants in the village, and the bakery below the windmill sells some of the best bread in France ( low on gluten and high on minerals and vitamins), traditionally baked in a wood-fired oven, made of stone-ground flour derived from organically grown, traditional, soft grains.

The area is renowned for its wines, which have vastly improved in quality over the last fifty years, but which are less famous, and therefore less expensive, than those of Burgundy or Bordeaux. The rich red wines are particularly excellent, and the sweet dessert wines are a local speciality. The grape types grown here: grenache, carignan, muscat, mourvèdre, maccabeu, roussane, and others, drenched in the hot summer sun, and strong enough to cope with the buffeting of the Tramontane wind, give the wines a particular originality. Tasting the wines of the local growers makes for pleasantly hazy afternoon excursions .... It is also an ideal place for walking, cycling (bikes may be hired), horse-riding, or just relaxing in the calm of these wild hills.

The upstairs flat sleeps three. It consists of a bathroom, an air-conditioned bedroom containing a double bed, and a living room with a small kitchen at one end, a dining area, and a single bed at the other. There is a small garden with a patio suitable for barbecues or sunbathing.

The flat is set on the second floor of a house belonging to a teacher of languages, who runs language courses; so your stay here can be an educational, as well as a recreational, holiday. Your teacher, fluent in both French and English, with some knowledge of German and Italian, and with a degree in history from Oxford University, and over twenty years teaching experience, fell for the charms of France and the French lifestyle while in her teens, and will be delighted to advise on places to visit, or to talk about the history surrounding the place.

Language courses : The price of your week depends on the course you choose. Standard course : fifteen hours' private tuition a week, (three hours each morning, Monday to Friday, leaving the afternoons free; 650€ per week for one person, 900€ for two) or else the Intensive course : twenty five hours per week (three hours in the mornings and two further hours in the afternoons; 850€ per week for one person, 1150€ for two). The price includes accommodation and tuition, but not meals. The course is different from most others on offer : these are not class lessons; it is just you and your teacher, who will diagnose your language problems and adapt the teaching to your particular needs. The visitors' book is full of the appreciative comments of those who have recovered confidence, or understood much for the first time, and have enjoyed the freedom to be found when working with individual tuition. For some, it has been the opportunity to follow up a particular interest, of history or literature. For many, who had been struggling with French, it has been the chance to make a breakthrough.

Response from the owner
I should perhaps mention that the evening lesson was an exception : it happened to fit the situation. Normally tuition starts on the Monday morning, and people have time to settle in unhurriedly.

Response from the owner
Sorry about the washing-up liquid ! I slipped up there. Normally I check that there is enough. I should like to add that lessons include listening practice from cds (and even dvds in the evenings), as well as a lot of talking, reading and writing.
