Description from owner

Description

I discovered this wonderful stone cottage in a poor state of repair in early 2000 when on holiday here in Domme. It has been a joy, working with local craftsman, to restore and discover the original shape and form of this village house which has now become a comfortable and contemporary home in this historic medieval village. We installed a small pool into the garden to cool down those hot summer days. Domme is considered to be one of the prettiest vilages in France and after ten years of holidaying here my heart gives a leap every time I return to see the Dordogne valley stretch out below the yellow stone beauty of this ancient hilltop village. The village dates back to the 12th century and was on the frontline of the 100 Years War and one of the last refuges for the Knights Templar. Stroll along the esplanade in the evening to watch the sun set on the Dordogne valley below or walk the fortified rampart around the village. Swim and canoe in the Dordogne river, cycle, horseride or take one of the many local walks through wooded countryside. Play tennis on the local village courts. Shop for food in the weekly village market.

Domme has a lovely selection of small family run restaurants. There is a well stocked supermarket in the neighbouring village, Cenac (a two minute drive or a 15 minute walk). 15 kilometres away is the well known medieval market town of Sarlat set in the Perigord Noir countryside. There are opportunities aplenty for fine dining in and around Domme: Hotel Esplanande, Hotel Perigord, Le Grand Bleu (Michellin starred), Sarlat to name only three of many.

“Great cottage, great garden and pool.”

Reviewed 26 Sep 2016

Very comfortable cottage right in the middle of historic Domme. Well equipped. Uk tv channels. Nice pool, small but adequate. Gorgeous figs from the tree in the garden ( Sept) Parking is on the road outside the house, but this did not prove to be a problem. Would go again - Domme is a beautiful village with shops and restaurants, situated perfectly for lots of nearby gardens, castles and markets.

“Just 'adorable'”

Reviewed 9 Oct 2015

We had a lovely fortnight in this 'adorable cottage'. It was very much a home from home - well-equipped and cosy. The house is situated in the middle of the village, a stone's throw from several restaurants, a (very touristy) selection of shops and the excellent weekly market. The cottage has a small but perfectly formed heated swimming pool in its' very private garden - just the right size for our family of 5 to play piggy-in-the-middle every night of our holiday! We loved being able to walk to the nearest restaurant for our coffee in the mornings or to the boulangerie for our croissants (or both as the restaurant was happy for us to eat our pastries whilst we had our coffee). This area of France is one of the prettiest we have visited, with almost every village begging to be explored and appreciated. Canoeing down the Dordogne river is highly recommended - but not in 42 degree heat! The house is spread over three floors so not suitable for those who would find stairs a problem and it lacks air conditioning, although there are fans in the bedrooms. In spite of this, we wouldn't hesitate to return.

“Improved Facilities Makes this Cottage Even Better!”

Reviewed 18 Sep 2015

We stayed here 3 years ago and absolutely loved it - always promising to return! Having decided to revisit, we were delighted to see that a swimming pool had been installed in the garden. Indeed the whole property inside and out has been given a makeover, bringing it bang up to date. For the first 3 days we didn't feel inclined to leave the cottage and just enjoyed relaxing by the pool which even includes a 'counter current' if you feel the need to exercise! The house accommodates 6 adults in comfort and 2 bathrooms ensures there's room for everyone. Sky TV and fast broadband is available and very welcome. The town of Domme is a huge tourist attraction, so being 1 minute from the centre but in absolute peace and tranquility makes this a very special place. We'll be back!

Response from the owner We are thrilled you enjoyed the newly updated cottage and garden as much as we do and look forward to seeing you again soon. Lucy

“Stunning Summer Stay”

Reviewed 18 Sep 2015

We really enjoyed staying here. The accommodation is ideally placed in the centre of Domme with parking and a perfect sized pool. Domme is the perfect base from which to explore the rest of the Dordogne Valley in that area and the cottage has an excellent information pack with excellent advice, reviews and tips for enjoying the area. The cottage is the perfect size and one you shut the gates on the garden, it feels like you're in the middle of no-where, which is amazing given it's central location. We had free run of the fresh figs and apricots from the tree in the garden and thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Highly recommended.

“Lovely cottage and fantastic base”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2015

Well appointed and comfortable accommodation perfectly situated to enjoy Domme at close hand. Great 6-8 km circular walks from the property; also recommend canoe on the Dordogne so close by. The kids loved the pool and the ice cream parlour a few hundered metres away in the evening. We all recommend the pizzeria and the Cabanoix et Chataignes restaurant in the town. Booking arrangements very straightforward - highly recommended!

Response from the owner Hi Diamuid, really happy that you had such a lovely holiday. Take Care. Lucy

“Quiet and relaxing stay in one of the prettiest villages in Dordogne”

Reviewed 10 Oct 2012

The location of this property was great - right in amongst everything, but in a back street so no street noise. You could park the car for the night and walk to restaurants. The town itself was one of, if not, the prettiest. Not a lot to do in any of the nearby towns at night, but this one seemed to have a decent amount of better-end restaurants (L'Esplanade was fabulous!) The property itself was comfortable and clean. It had all that we needed for a quiet friends get together. Overall, just a nice place to relax and forget about the rest of the world.

“Recommend a stay in the summer season”

Reviewed 9 Oct 2012

Having only visited off season when the village is very quiet and a stay consists of walks, markets, good meals out and cosy evenings, it was great to experience the summer madness. If you ignore the miniature trains , the rest is lovely; bigger markets, quality buskers, shops selling miniature knights Templar, the chance to look around the impressive bastide buildings, and, most importantly the chance for a daily swim in the Dordogne which is 10 minutes away by car, 20 minutes on foot. Read the other review about the noisy neighbours, and thankfully they weren't there during my weeks stay so we enjoyed quiet days and evenings eating dinner in the garden. The house was as comfortable in summer as it had been in winter....a welcome stoney-cool retreat from the heat.
