*The Space*
Gibbes Great House is truly unique - a detached, single-storey and lovingly maintained plantation house set within its own two acres of lush and tranquil grounds on the ‘Platinum Coast’ of Barbados.
As the gates open off the coast road and you sweep up the drive past the lily pond and the 18th-century cannon that guards the entrance to the property, the first thing that will strike you about Gibbes Great House is the distinctive fan-shaped ironwork that surrounds the large front verandah, with its own bar and evening entertaining space. Climb the grand steps and walk through the verandah and you will be transported back in time to a Barbados of a century ago.
The open plan living and dining space follow an ancient time-honoured tradition of West Indian plantation house design with mahogany floors throughout the entire property. Crystal chandeliers and ceiling fans adorn the ceiling, antique mahogany furniture line the thick coral walls and a ten-seat dining table invites scenes of hearty breakfasts or candlelit dinner parties. Walk past the cabinets filled with the owners' collection of Barbadian memorabilia into the planter's room. In here the traditional Caribbean rattan furniture and British fabrics give the opportunity to relax with either the benefit of flat-screen television with a host of satellite channels or the perfectly in-tune 1940s Kemble tropical upright piano, with beautiful views across the gardens to the pool area.
Gibbes House has four bedrooms situated to the side and rear of the property, all with beautiful views of the tropical gardens.
