The Old Bake House is a charming, characterful retreat, perfect for 2, and enjoys a peaceful, rural setting by the River Monnow surrounded by farmland and ancient hedgerows. at the foot of the Black Hill. The cottage offers spectacular walking from the front door in the wild and remote Black Mountains on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. For more relaxing days,the large, private gardens provide plenty of space to soak up the sun or curl up with a book on the lawn.

Herefordshire's Black and White Village Trail is within easy striking distance and provides an ideal opportunity to discover historic timbered and half-timbered buildings, some dating from medieval times. A visit to Hay-on-Wye is a must and the lane from the Cottage takes you through spectacular scenery along the way. Famous for its Literary Festival in May, Hay is full of quirky and attractive antique and curio shops, book shops, vintage clothing shops and characterful cafes.

There are some lovely tucked away pubs - The Crown Inn in Longtown and The Bridge Inn at Michaelchurch Escley and the Bull's Head in Craswall, well worth the 2.6 mile walk from the cottage.

The Cottage is some 8 miles from Hay-on-Wye, and roughly 16 miles from Abergavenny and Hereford.

The Property

A wonderful sun room catches the sunshine all day and radiates warmth through the cottage. This is the perfect place to simply sit and admire the beautiful garden and visiting wildlife, or enjoy a romantic dinner as the sun sets.

The spacious living room features a vaulted ceiling and exposed original oak beams. There is a large wood burning stove and a good supply of logs in the colder months. The furniture is contemporary and consists of a comfortable sofa with chaise longue plus TV, DVD player and Freesat satellite TV. Streamed internet TV , via a NOW TV stick, provides access to both catch up TV and subscription sport, entertainment and movie channels (temporary NOW subscriptions are required to access this content).

Off the living room is a compact but well equipped kitchen with an electric cooker with glass hob and double oven,plus fridge. The adjoining utility room has a microwave, washer/dryer and small undercounter freezer.

The Bedroom is bright and airy with a king-sized bed and dual aspect windows overlooking the gardens.

A spacious shower room features a generous shower, hand basin and WC.

River Cottage, our other holiday let, is about 70 metres away in its own grounds. It sleeps 4 in an ensuite double room and a twin bedroom and we often have Grandparents staying in The Old Bake House while the grandchildren and their parents stay in River Cottage.

How do damage deposits work?

In most cases, you don’t pay a damage deposit up front. Instead, we save your payment details securely and you’re only charged in the event of damage to the property.

Occasionally, you will pay a damage deposit up front as part of the total rental cost. In this case, the owner has 10 days after you check out to report any damage. If they don’t, we’ll return your deposit. If their claim is successful, we’ll deduct the agreed cost and return the remainder.

Go to Manage your holiday booking to cancel your booking. Here you can view your cancellation policy to see if you’ll be refunded.

How do I edit my booking?

You can request to change the dates or number of people on your booking via the Manage your holiday booking page. To change your holiday dates use the Edit booking button. If you need to change the number of guests staying then send Gethin (the owner) a message.

If Gethin (the owner) agrees, they’ll send you a revised quote outlining the changes. You can review and accept/decline this from the Manage your holiday booking page. You’ll have 48 hours to take action before the revised quote expires.
