From the owner

Helmsdale Station is a working railway station on the Far North Line 100 railway miles, 70 road miles, north of Inverness. During 2013 the listed station building was restored and refitted after more than 20 years out of use. The old stationmaster’s accommodation has been refurbished and adapted as self catering accommodation. As a non profit making community project to promote tourism in East Sutherland, all proceeds go to station improvements, promoting the Far North Line and assisting community projects in and around Helmsdale.

Response from the owner
Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately the day of your arrival was the day of the Helmsdale & Loth Flower show. Helmsdale is a small village (pop. 810) and out caretaker Kath was one of the key residents who plays a significant organising role. In consequence of her current poor health, she was on Saturday afternoon exhausted by this and asked her daughter in law to service the house. Because of childminding commitments this could not be done punctually and in consequence you suffered the service failure. You describe me as the owner of the property. In fact the property is rented from Network Rail & ScotRail by the Helmsdale Station CIC; I am one of its directors who looks after affairs on behalf of the community as an unpaid voluntary activity. Around 10% of the income from each booking is distributed to local charities and community causes at the end of each year. You didn't mention in your report that on hearing of the upset the lack of timely preparation caused you, we did without hesitation refund this community benefit surplus and more to you as compensation.
