This location is great ! In the lushness near downtown Hilo, yet far enough away to not be in traffic or car noise. Excellent restaurants are very nearby, as well as numerous beaches to choose from, including Richardson's surf beach- which you can watch from the lanai. In 5 minutes, you can be in downtown Hilo for more restaurants, museums, shopping, shows, and the wonderful Farmers Market where you will find a huge variety of exotic fruits and flowers, home made food, and crafts while being serenaded by music outdoors. Suisan Fresh Fish Market is 2 miles away, where you choose from multiple catches of the day and add deli combinations from their counter of pokes ( seafood salad ) and seafood cocktails for superb meals at home.
5 miles north puts you on the Hawaii Belt road and many miles of spectacular coastline viewing, as well as trails to walk and gardens to visit. You will pass Mauna Kea and the Parker Ranch once you turn inland, and then can head south to Kona for a day on the other side of the island.
Go south 20 miles to visit Volcano National Park with its trails and lava tubes to explore, excellent museum, live volcano, and eat at the incredible Volcano House Hotel where Mark Twain used to visit, then go to the town of Volcano with its Volcano Winery ( taste the honey macadamia wine...) .
Even further south are the Black Sand Beach, and the Green Sand Beach- always lots of huge turtles here, and Captain Cook- a beautiful little town south of Kona.
Diving, snorkeling, kayaking, outrigger canoeing, stand-up-paddleboarding, surfing and lava viewing tours are all around. Watch whales up close and personal with a guided tour ( or from the lanai ). Take a night snorkeling tour in Kona to watch Mantas feeding. Visit macadamia nut or coffee farms, and savor the samples.
