On the doorstep of an ancient landscape
For self-drive travellers, Katherine is one of the Northern Territory's must-visit destinations. The beauty of this region is that you can reach an incredible variety of attractions on sealed roads, so in the dry season you won't necessarily need a 4WD.
The highlight is Nitmiluk National Park. You can take a cruise or kayak through Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, bushwalk and swim in the idyllic Leliyn (Edith) Falls. Katherine also has picturesque hot springs, the Cutta Cutta caves to explore, the fascinating Katherine Outback Heritage Museum and the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Cultural Centre. Given the riches of the region, you will want to plan a stay of several days to have time to see everything at a relaxed pace.
St Andrews Serviced Apartments in the heart of Katherine offers an outback oasis that just keeps getting better each time we visit. Recent additions include downstairs decks shaded by tropical planting and a pizza oven by the cooling pool. All the facilities are here to self-cater or you can wander one street to dining and shopping.
When it comes time to choosing tours or booking a cruise, the friendly staff will give you the inside tips on the best choices and the right time of day to visit each hot spot.
