Description

The Shippen at Old Low Moor Farm, Knayton near Thirsk is a new barn conversion opened in June 2018 and set in beautiful countryside overlooking the Hambleton Hills on the edge of the North York Moors National Park but still with easy access to the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the other attractions of North Yorkshire including York, Harrogate and the North Yorkshire coast.

The Shippen is single storey and has a large, vaulted, open plan living /dining/ kitchen with a brick fire place and wood burning stove. The property has underfloor heating throughout and there is free WiFi throughout the property. The kitchen is very well equipped with integrated fridge/freezer, oven, microwave and dishwasher. It has granite worktops with an induction hob and is fully equipped with crockery, cutlery and any necessary kitchen equipment. There is comfortable seating in the living area for four/five with a smart TV with Freeview Plus and a dining table and dining chairs for six.

The main bedroom has a super-king (6 foot) zip and link bed which can be separated into two singles if required as well as a spacious en-suite bathroom with a large "walk in" shower, separate bath, wash basin and toilet. The second bedroom has a king size double bed and an en-suite shower room with "walk in" shower, wash basin and toilet. The main bedroom has ample room for a baby's cot or cot bed suitable for a child up to 4/5 both of which can be made available on request.

We welcome wheelchair users. The Shippen has been designed to be wheelchair friendly with easy, level access from the car parking area, wide doorways, ample room in the living area to manoeuvre a wheelchair and a walk in shower and bathroom large enough to accommodate a wheel chair We can supply a frame to go around the toilet and a raised toilet seat if required, as well as a shower chair for the shower.

There is a separate guest laundry with washing machine and tumble drier, available for guests to use.

Cyclists are welcome, there are many recognised cycle routes passing close to the property and we can provide secure, locked storage and washing facilities for bikes.

Outside there is a large patio area with table and chairs and a BBQ. The patio overlooks the tennis court which is available for use by guests free of charge (tennis racquets and balls can be provided). There is also a play area for children with swings, slide, seesaw and trampoline suitable for children between 3 and 12, under the supervision of an adult.

There is a well stocked coarse fishing lake in the grounds and guests are welcome to fish free of charge (fishing gear can be provided if. Also on site is a stable block with a ménage and grazing and guests are welcome to bring their own horse by prior arrangement with the owners (extra charges will apply).

There is a local pub ( the Dog and Gun) within walking distance (approx 1/2 mile) which serves excellent food (Wednesdays to Sundays inclusive, although it is necessary to book well in advance) and there are various other excellent pubs and restaurants within a short drive which we are happy to recommend.

“Fantastic property and great hosts”

We have just returned from a weeks stay at The Shippen and had a wonderful relaxing stay. The conversion has been done to a very high standard with everything you could possibly need, underfloor heating is complemented with a wood burner and kindling and logs supplied. We were very impressed with the welcome hamper and found the super king sized bed so comfortable. Karen and Jeff were very welcoming nothing is too much trouble for them, we will definitely be recommending The Shippen to our friends and family.

Having looked endlessly for accessible accommodation for an accompanied wheelchair user both through tourist information in the North Yorkshire area and searches online I was delighted to come across The Shippen which was due for completion mid 2018. Making contact with the owners as it approached completion they were extremely helpful in checking the property was going to be suitable before proceeding with booking and provided lots of photos. On arrival we absolutely weren't disappointed and myself and family members enjoyed one of the nicest weeks holiday we have had in a long while helped by the warm late summer sunshine. Both Karen and Jeff were extremely helpful and welcoming, ensuring everything was so my independence could be maximised during my stay given people with different levels of impairment have different needs etc. The property was spotlessly clean and modern and the large arched windows made it a lovely light space. As the weather was so pleasant we spent most of the daytime hours visiting the local area in which there was so much to see but local towns of Thirst and Northallerton are only a short distance away for those wanting to just chill out in this lovely quiet location, each cottage having its own outdoor seating area and other facilities on site to enjoy if you wish. As the weather was kind to us we had no issues with heating but with a woodburner all set to be installed this would be a really cosy place to come away and relax in peaceful surroundings during the colder months. The generous welcome hamper was a real treat and a few fridge essentials meant we could make a cup of tea on arrival. Most definitely we are hoping to re visit in 2019 but anyone considering booking this property you won't be disappointed and whilst it is suitable for individuals with mobility problems with wide doorways and a wet room it is equally suitable for able bodied with no special modifications making it appear as a 'disabled' property. Finally, also appreciated was the flexibility offered with travel dates and there being no specific requirement to book for a full 7 days and from a set date as is often the case. Many thanks Karen and Jeff for making us feel so welcome and we look forward to our return visit as I need to revisit the arcades of south bay Scarborough !

We enjoyed a four day stay at the Old Shippen and found it very comfortable, well decorated and equipped with everything we could possibly need. We received a very warm welcome from the very thoughtful hosts, along with a generous welcome hamper. The children enjoyed the onsite tennis courts, play area and regular visits from the resident dog Tangles. I was on crutches at the time of our visit and nothing was too much trouble - a shower chair was available to make my stay more manageable. I would definitely recommend to anyone with mobility problems. We look forward to staying again soon!

We enjoyed a lovely short break at the Old Shippen, receiving a warm welcome from the very hospitable hosts. The barn was ideally situated for visiting many local attractions - Fountains Abbey, Lightwater Valley and Forbidden Corner, to name a few. The barn was beautifully decorated and was equipped with everything you could possibly need for your stay. The kids enjoyed the onsite facilities in particular the tennis court, trampoline, play park and our regular visits from the resident dog Tangles. The accommodation is ideal for anyone with mobility problems - I was on crutches at the time of our visit and the owner Karen was very thoughtful providing a shower chair and wheelchair to make my stay more comfortable. We look forward to visiting again.

Given a very warm welcome by Karen on arrival. Stayed in The Shippen which was fabulous. A lovely welcome basket full of goodies which was great. Hubby loves fishing so Jeff provided all he needed so he could fish his lake. Accommodation was first class...one of four fabulous converted farm buildings in a very lovely setting. Well located for exploring the North of Yorkshire. Can't rate this place highly enough. Thank you Karen and Jeff for making our stay most enjoyable. Look forward to our return visit.
