From the owner

Loch Portain House is situated on North Uist, an island forming part of the Outer Hebrides on the West Coast of Scotland. It is ideally located only 8 miles from Lochmaddy Ferry Terminal and offers commanding views over both Loch Portain & the freshwater Priest's Loch - famous for fishing. This idyllic holiday location is surrounded by stunning beaches, stretching machair lands and freshwater lochs. The RSPB Balranald nature reserve is on the west coast of the island and is famous for red kites. Trips to nearby St Kilda can be arranged locally. North Uist is connected by a series of causeways to Berneray, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay. There is a regular short ferry to Harris and Lewis as well as Barra.

Loch Portain House benefits from private parking, a grassed garden and a detached garage shared with our other cottage, An Taigh Boighreach, with children's beach toys & body boards – feel free to borrow. You can also store your bikes, fishing rods, canoe and other equipment there. Loch Portain House is decorated and equipped to a very high standard including a large, modern extension. The house sleeps up to 8 guests plus cot available; Ikea highchair can be provided on request.. Master bedroom has king-size bed with en suite power shower, two twin bedrooms (in one twin bedroom the bed can be made into a super king sized bed on request) and a good quality bed settee in the lounge which is virtually double bed sized - 2" narrower and shorter than the standard. It also has a large family bathroom. Both bathrooms have mist-free mirrors. Relax sitting beside the open peat fire and enjoy the views over Loch Portain from the bright, spacious sitting room & dining area which also features a fully fitted kitchen with island bar (USB charging point provided). Or from the bedrooms the view os over the world famous ( for brown trout ) Priest's Loch. The house is fully equipped with wi-fi, freeview, a DVD player, washer/dryer, fridge/freezer and dishwasher. There are garden chairs and disposable BBQs are in each cottage on an honesty box basis - perfect for that last minute picnic. A selection of books, DVDs CDs and games are also provided. We currently book on a weekly basis, Saturday to Saturday but please contact us if you would like to discuss other dates.

We do not allow smoking within the house however you are welcome to smoke in the garden.

Wheelchair Access

There is a relatively level gravel path to the side door, where there is a low step, giving access to all areas including bedrooms with no further steps. The sitting room area has several easily accessible settees; circulation space would be increased if a settee was repositioned. The main bathroom, with a shower over bath, is wheelchair accessible while the en-suite compact shower room can be accessed but not entered in a wheelchair. Wildlife paradise on North Uist

Well-equipped and comfortable home with wonderful views. We had red deer, hen harriers and cuckoos all visiting. Loch Portain is a lovely area of North Uist and convenient for the ferry at Lochmaddy.

How do damage deposits work?

In most cases, you don’t pay a damage deposit up front. Instead, we save your payment details securely and you’re only charged in the event of damage to the property.

Occasionally, you will pay a damage deposit up front as part of the total rental cost. In this case, the owner has 10 days after you check out to report any damage. If they don’t, we’ll return your deposit. If their claim is successful, we’ll deduct the agreed cost and return the remainder.

How do I edit my booking?

You can request to change the dates or number of people on your booking via the Manage your holiday booking page. To change your holiday dates use the Edit booking button. If you need to change the number of guests staying then send Alasdair (the owner) a message.

If Alasdair (the owner) agrees, they’ll send you a revised quote outlining the changes. You can review and accept/decline this from the Manage your holiday booking page. You’ll have 48 hours to take action before the revised quote expires.
