The Chania Prefecture region

The Crete region
Beautiful Crete and Chania, a heavenly and pure land brimming with natural beauty, history, memory and culture. It is a land whose visitors will experience nature in all its glory and will encounter breathtaking sights.

Endless stretches of seashore bordered in frothy lace, inlets and islands of exotic beauty and sandy beaches tucked away at the foot of forbidding mountains. Impenetrable but yet such majestic gorges, holy caves, blessed rivers and lush, green plateaus thickly covered with olive and citrus trees. It is a self-sufficient land in every way that is rich in endemic and rare flora and fauna. We highly recommend that you take a stroll in the city centre of Hania which is steeped in history; a sightseeing tour of the crossroads and the winding cobbled paths of civilizations with the starting point being the most central point in Hania: the Municipal Market or the Agora. The Venetian old town with its harbour and Lighthouse, with its excellent restaurants and shops will fascinate you!

PLATANIAS
Following the north central road network from Hania to Kissamos for no more than ten (10) kilometers (6,2 miles) and without losing sight of the beautiful coast side that oversees the Cretan Sea, we meet the most organized tourist region of the district of Hania: Platanias.
As most of the villages of the area, the first references of it can be traced back in ancient times, while there is a clear history of it in the Venetian archives.
Beautiful beaches that have never failed to be nominated with blue flags for their organization and cleanliness surround Platanias. They all look upon the little island of Theodorou, which, according to an ancient myth, was a giant sea monster that was petrified for eternity in that very location.
The village possibly employs the very best in quality and the most complete tourist services in the district of Hania. Beyond its network of hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops and recreation facilities of all kind, as well as jewelry shops, super markets, banks etc. there can also be found health clinics, pharmacies, nurseries, an elementary and a high school that cover the local needs of all the municipality. Transportation and communication with Hania by bus is well scheduled and on the clock. The village's good transportation network, combined with its well-put location (close to Hania but also in the countryside) gives the visitor of Platanias the opportunity to travel fast and easily to most of the worthwhile sights of the district of Hania.
Here you will have the chance to meet and truly understand many of the aspects of Crete itself, its agriculture, its unique beauties, its superb cuisine and flavors, its tradition, its villages and its monuments that attest how this land has put a deep mark on history and civilization.
Undoubtedly, the images of the Cretan hospitality of the people of Platanias and their traditional celebrations will be an unforgettable experience and a warm memory.
Try to find time to... honor them with your presence at one of the four festivals that begin in July and end in early September. Taste the local thyme honey, Gruyere cheese, light wine, fried delicacies and, of course, tsikoudia...
Here the local population, besides olive cropping, collects chestnuts, produces honey and even manufactures coal in a traditional manner. At the traditional cafeterias you will be able to buy the local products made here.
Also, a horse riding school operates in the area, with its own tavern for rest, food and horseback riding.

Beaches in the area of the West of Chania accommodation:

Aghia Marina (fine sandy, extends for 4 kms)

MALEME
Maleme, a village that has been marked by history in various ways and times. Its roots begin in the post-Minoan era . The oldest churches in the village are those of Aghios Antonios, which was built in 1918, and the small Byzantine chapel of Saint Peter and Paul, a building of 1530, which may be the oldest in the whole region.

AGHIA MARINA
Aghia Marina is a small village 8 kms west of Chania town. There is a beautiful sandy beach here that is 4kms long. The old village is a ten minute walk from the beach and it is very popular for the excellent and reasonable tavernas offering homemade fresh food. The newer area by the sea, has a long lane of shops, few banks, bakeries and some supermarkets. It has a very frequent bus service that takes you to Chania old town within 20 minutes. There are little wheel trains in Aghia Marina, offering transport to nearby villages and short excursions to the Waterpark and the gorge of Therisso.Watersports and beach volley is available nearby on this beach.Nightlife is also great here, as it offers alot of wine bars and music restaurants. The town of Platanias is a twenty minute walk, where another extended choice of cosmopolitan life is available for day and night!

Maleme

Maleme is located in West Crete, 16 kilometres from Chania. It is just 2 kilometres from the large seaside resort of Platanias and essentially forms part of the great tourist area extending from Chania in the east to Kolymbari in the west. Maleme offers visitors a lovely beach and ever-developing tourist infrastructure.Maleme is ideal for people who want to be near the sea, with a wide variety of choices for excursions and fun. Maleme is next to Platanias with its exciting night-life, so you can take part in it any time you want. You can also avoid it altogether if it's not what you're looking for on your Cretan holiday. From Maleme you can be in Chania, with the most picturesque old town in Crete, in minutes. You can also explore the west coast of Crete with the Balos Lagoon and the famous Elafonissi, or spend romantic moments enjoying the sunset at Falassarna. Maleme Beach is worth mentioning. It is wide, sandy and quite long. The westernmost end of Maleme Beach is almost empty, with just a few trees for those who feel the need for some shade.
