How to get there

La Rochelle lies halfway down the Atlantic coast, midway between Nantes and Bordeaux. Ile de Ré is linked to La Rochelle by a 3km bridge. Return charges for a car - 9 euro low season, 16,50 euro high season. Motorbikes - 2 euro; and bikes and Pedestrians - free. (Season tickets available at the bridge office)

CAR HIRE - There is a large car hire company based at the airport which you can book direct or via your airline.

EUROSTAR - from Waterloo or Ashford to Pairs Gare du Nord and connect with the TGV La Rochelle Station has daily direct connections to Nantes, Bordeaux and Paris-Montparnasse by TVG Atlantique. The journey Paris - La Rochelle takes around 3 hours.

LOCAL BUS - There are regular buses from La Rochelle Airport and La Rochelle railway station. They take you directly to Ile de Ré and the service is all year to all villages of the island. RTCR (summer only) La Rochelle-Ile de Ré link

LOCAL TAXI - There are many taxi firms and a well occupied rank at the airport, railway station and centre ville. If there is no taxi at the Airport then there is a free telephone point to call one.

Getting around

The best way to enjoy the island is on bike and St Martin (the Capital of Ile de Ré) is just a 15 min ride away and most of the island can be explored this way with or without the use of a car. The cosmopolitan city of La Rochelle is only a 15 km away adding many possible activities and visits to your stay. You can drive however, there is a great passenger ferries service every day from St Martin de Re to La Rochelle Old Port (45 mins by sea). There are also buses every hour from La Flotte harbour to La Rochelle centre ville.
