The Isle of Wight is served by two main car ferry companies. Red Funnel run services from Southampton to East Cowes and Wightlink run services from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and Lymington to Yarmouth. Whilst a car is recommended it is possible to travel by public transport with a fast catamaran service from Southampton to West Cowes (Red Funnel) and a hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde.A train runs from Ryde to Shanklin and the island has an efficient bus service.
