How to get there

The Island of Harris is easily accessible by both ferry and airplane. Scalpay is accessible by high-span road bridge from Harris and is just a 15 minutes drive from Tarbert, Harris ferry terminal and little over an hour from the ferry port and airport in Stornoway. The 1 hour 45 mins crossing departs from Uig in Skye and arrives in Tarbert, Harris. Scalpay is a 15 minute drive from Tarbert. If you would prefer to journey from Ullapool, the ferry crosses to Stornoway in Lewis (2hr 45 mins crossing time) with an on-wards drive time of approximately 1hr to Scalpay. It is advisable to book car ferries at time of booking confirmation as they can be very busy at peak times. Visit Calmac. There are regular flights to Stornoway Airport from Glasgow (50 mins), Edinburgh (1 hour), Inverness (35 mins) and Aberdeen (55 mins). Scalpay is a little over an hours drive from Stornoway Airport. Air carriers include: Loganair; Flybe; and Eastern Airways

Sail: If you are a seafarer who likes to stay on land at destination, there is ample mooring at both North and South Harbours of Scalpay. South Harbour is just in front of Bannatyne House. North harbour now boasts a new marina with moorings. Lots to explore from a beautiful base including the Shiant islands and St. Kilda

Getting around

A car is recommended to explore the islands of Harris and Lewis. There are however bus services including a bus stop a short walk from Bannatyne House with buses to Tarbert (stopping at a few places along the way) with onward buses to Leverburgh and Stornoway, respectively, with various stops on the way. There is also a local Taxi service - Harris Taxis - again details are available at Bannatyne House. Other ways to get around include local boat services that can be chartered -again local providers are detailed in guest information available prior to your stay and in the guest folder. For various walks including Scalpay Lighthouse, you can also enjoy on foot, setting out from the house!
