How to get there
Air
Kuala Terengganu Airport is around 20 kilometres to the north of town. A taxi there will cost 20 ringgit. The airport is served by AirAsia (Kuala Lumpur - LCCT), Firefly (Kuala Lumpur - Subang) and Malaysia Airlines (Kuala Lumpur).
Bus
The main bus station is conveniently located in the centre of town and all the various bus companies have their kiosks around the edge of the station. Sample fares with Transnasional include:
Kuala Lumpur: 7 departures daily taking 6.5 hours and costing 40.20 ringgit
Kuantan: 10:30 and 20:30 taking 4 hours and costing 18 ringgit
Johor Bahru: 09:30 and 21:30, taking 8 hours and costing 44.30 ringgit
Kota Bharu: 10:00, 13:45, 17.30 and 20:00 taking 3 hours and costing 15.50 ringgit
Note that there are more than a dozen different bus companies at the station, so visit the day before and shop around for a price and time that fits best with your plans.
Getting Around
The central taxi stand is behind the bus station. Taxis do not use a meter and the fare is best agreed beforehand. Sample fares from the taxi station include:
Pulau Duyong (for Awi's House) 10-15 ringgit
Airport 20 ringgit
Batu Buruk Beach 12 ringgit
National Museum 15 ringgit
In theory there are three lines, all departing from the central bus station. One runs to Pulau Duyong (on the way to somewhere else), one to the National Museum (and onto TTI) and one via Batu Buruk Beach and on to Chendering.
Unfortunately motorbikes cannot be hired so short of the crappy local buses your only other option is taxis.
