There are a few ways to get there - best airport would be Malaga although some people say that Gibralter is not that far. From Malaga airport you can either hire a car, catch a taxi or take the coach which runs regularly. If opting for the coach you can take the coach from the airport into Marbella which takes around 45/50 minutes and it's a short cab ride from there (10 minutes). The coach and short cab ride are the most economical route. A car is not necessary but will give you the freedom to travel further afield and secure underground parking is available at a reasonable charge subject to availability - please enquire in advance of your arrival to secure a spot.
