How to get there

If travelling from the south along the M6 motorway, exit at junction 36, sign-posted South Lakes, Windermere, etc.and follow the A590/A591 west to Windermere. Hartsop is 25 miles from here, which takes about 40 minutes. The A590 soon branches off, but keep on the A591 dual carriageway. Follow this road to Windermere until a mini-roundabout is reached. Turn right onto the A592, sign-posted Kirkstone Pass. Follow this road over the Pass and down the other side to the Patterdale Valley. The Brotherswater Inn is passed on the left, the Hartsop junction being one mile further on the right. Turn right at the stone shelter, and continue straight ahead towards Hartsop. Mill Cottage is part of the first property on the right hand side of the narrow lane. Park in the gated area in front of the cottage.
In winter, when conditions on the Pass may be difficult, continue along the M6 motorway and exit at junction 40 at Penrith. Bear left onto the A66 (west) for one mile to the next roundabout, and take the second exit onto the A592 sign-posted Ullswater. Hartsop is 15 miles from here, the road following the west shore of Ullswater, passing through Glenridding and Patterdale. The Hartsop junction mentioned earlier will now be on the left, two miles south of Patterdale.

Getting around

Our guests are served well by walks starting at the cottage door, and many are pleased to leave their car behind during their stay. However, a car is recommended for visiting further afield. Only at holiday times does a bus service link Hartsop to the local villages of Patterdale and Glenridding, and to Windermere, Penrith and Keswick. At Glenridding (3 miles away), Ullswater Steamers operate a service throughout the year to Aira Force, Howtown and Pooley Bridge. Hartsop is conveniently situated for exploring the whole of the Lake District by car, and visits to Borrowdale, Buttermere, the Langdales and Coniston Water are frequently chosen by our guests.
