How to get there

Getting Here from within the Highlands By Car. Most visitors arrive by car, especially as the bus service seems to get more erratic every year. Driving time from Inverness (via Ullapool) is about 2 hours, and there are plenty of car hire options in Inverness.

By Bus

It is possible to travel to Assynt by bus – but the only buses to the area are from Inverness in the south (via Dingwall & Ullapool), and in the summer from Durness in the north. From Inverness there are 2 or 3 daily bus services to Ullapool and these usually connect with a bus on to Lochinver (not on Sundays).

There is also a bus from Gairloch to Braemore Junction near Ullapool 3 days a week. During the summer (May to September) there is a 6-day a week (also Sundays in July & August) bus service from Inverness to Durness (passing Ullapool & Lochinver) that leaves Inverness about 9am, passes Lochinver about noon, and returns to Inverness leaving Durness about 3pm and Lochinver at about 5pm.

This service will take bicycles if you wish bring your bike and then cycle about the quiet roads of Assynt.

Public transport travel information is best found at Traveline Scotland – as this will show all options available between any 2 locations on a specific day.
