The site had previously been a Taino settlement since around 500AD. The Spanish had previously occupied Sevilla la Nueva (now called St. Ann's Bay) for some 30 years, however, finding life difficult there they decided to establish a more suitable settlement in the southern part of the Island. The site was chosen for its proximity to fresh water (the Rio Cobre), its fer
