The Space
With six bedrooms, Wasantha’s is big enough to fit a group of up to 13 people, but they rent it out per room as well. Rooms are nicely done and quite spacious and have their own bathroom each, while sharing a living room and kitchen downstairs. From the balcony you can see the waves and around the house there’s a small garden with papaya and mango trees, so if you’re in season…
Interaction with Guests
Wasantha and his family are deeply embedded in Midigama and have been part of its tourism boom from the start. Wasantha and his wife run a big hotel nearby, their sons are surfers and lifeguards when they’re not in the backyard pumping iron to shape up for the girls. Even grandpa ran a few shops in Midigama town, so between all of them there’s surf and other stories for two lifetimes. Food as well as trips can be arranged with ease.
The Neighborhood
Once you get to the area around Matara you’ve reached the Southern end of Sri Lanka. It was here, standing on the Dondra Head that biologists spotted the giant Blue Whales only a few years ago, which kicked of Mirissa as a whale watching hub. Matara itself is where you arrive by bus, go to the bank and do some shopping, while nearby Midigama, Weligama and Polhena are where the surfers go. Further East lie the beach towns Tangalle and Rekawa, which is known for its turtle hatchery. This area would certainly be our choice for a beach vacation.
Wasantha’s, a mere 30 metres from the beach makes it ideal for those looking to surf as Midigama, along with Arugam Bay and nearby Mirissa, attracts surfers from all over the world.
