Holidays by the sea in Southern Greece
In the Byzantine setting of Monemvasia
• Location: South Eastern Peloponnese
• Approach: by road from Athens
• History: inhabited since 588 AD, Monemvasia is located on an island rock linked to the mainland by a bridge. A Byzantine fortress was built on this rock referred to as the “Castro”. The houses in the lower part of the rock have been restored respecting the Byzantine style and are inhabited through most of the year.
• Activitiies:
in the Castro: a city without anything moving on wheels, small cobbled lanes, with a main street bursting with commerce; the rest calm and quite with colourful serenity; swimming through the “portello”, an opening in the lower defence walls; visit the Byzantine churches , other monuments and the archaeological museum.
on the mainland: beaches, classical period as well as Byzantine sites including wonderful churches, rich caves, hikes, fish taverns and cafes, night life.
For more details about activities see the attached addendum
• Accomodation
My wife and I have two types of accommodation to offer:
1. A house in the Castro: 30 meters from the sea and swimming, we run two autonomous bed-sitters, one (30 sq.m.) with a double bed, the other (40 sq.m) with a double bed and two singles. Each room has its own separate bathroom. The house also comprises a 45 sq.m. vaulted room with kitchen and dining area as well as a mezzanine. We do not usually rent this part of the house. However, arrangements can be made, if you plan to have a self catering holiday. In such a case, the house can accommodate a total of 8 people, with two sleeping on two single beds on the mezzanine.
2. A house overlooking the sea: close to the longest sandy beach in the area, some 4km south from the Castro. This is our home where we have built two autonomous studios (25 sq.m.) each. Both studios have a double bed (with space for a single additional folding bed, if required) and a spacious bathroom. They open onto a large, cool terrace overlooking the garden and the sea..
Come and enjoy sun, sea and history
