Le isole si possono visitare in barca con gite organizzate con partenza da Porto San Paolo oppure semplicemente noleggiando un gommone direttamente in spiaggia di Porto Istana.Tutta l'area marina protetta è caratterizzata da fondali mozzafiato, spiagge bianchissime e mari cristallini tra i più belli di tutta l'isola. Escursioni da non perdere sono quelle alle isole di Spargi, Budelli e Santa Maria, con partenze giornaliere da Porto rotondo o Baia sardinia; oppure quella al Golfo di Orosei alla spiaggia Cala Luna ed alle Grotte del bue marino, timida foca locale. E' naturalmente possibile fare delle escursioni in proprio imbarcandosi a Palau con l'auto per visitare l'isola della Maddalena, con le sue belle spiagge, e Caprera, con la casa di Garibaldi.
