35km to the northeast is Kimi, a charming hill town, known as “The balcony to the Aegean”, with a pleasant harbor below where the ferry to Skyros island is located. The birthplace of the world-renowned doctor G. Papanikolaou (Pap-Test), Kimi is also famous for its Folklore Museum, medicinal springs of Choneftiko and local sweet “almond baklava”. It is worth taking a scenic trip around the picturesque mountain villages of Kimi with their traditional cafes and tavernas offering authentic local delicacies and good wine.

Nea Stira (20mins / South Evia)

The delightful seaside village of Nea Styra has a pleasant paved seafront with numerous cafes, bars, fish and meat tavernas where you can sit and enjoy spectacular sunsets over the Gulf of Evia.

Dimosaris Gorge (70km/1hr45mins, Southern Evia)

Take a trip to the famous Dimosaris gorge (12km long) on the north side of Mt. Ochi(1.398m) which ends at the coastal village of Kaliani. Covered in plane, chestnut and oak trees, it is renowned for its wildlife (Natura 2000) with rare species of plants and birds. Start off at Lenosei ‘Λενοσαίοι’ village (approx. 2km from Kaliani) and walk up the gorge following the old cobble stoned path that runs parallel to the river. A good picnic spot is about 40mins uphill walk with waterfalls and big flat boulders ideal for a rest. On your return from the gorge, you’ll see the river that runs into the Aegean sea over a beautiful sandy beach.

Karystos (50km/1hr20mins, Southern Evia)

Further south is the attractive coastal town of Karystos, a town of considerable historical significance with several ancient sites and ruins. Visit the medieval Venetian castles of Castello Rosso and Bourtzi ( dating from the 13th century), the Archaeological Museum of Karystos and the cave of Agia Triada.

Dragon Houses (Karystos and Styra area, Southern Evia)

Visit the mysterious and impressive Dragon houses on Mt. Ochi linked to prehistory with their myths and legends. These cyclopean structures, built with huge, monolithic stones, are believed to be the creations of the first inhabitants of the area, the Dryopes. Just below the peak of Mt. Ochi is the most important and well-preserved Dragon-house, a place of worship dedicated to Hera or Hercules, according to archaeologists.

Chalkida (1hr/Central Evia)

An hour’s drive north takes you to the island’s capital, Chalkida, which marks the midpoint between southern and northern Evia and has a bridge connection to the mainland. The bridge spans the Straits of Evripos, famous for the reversal in direction of its tidal flow every six hours.

Eretria (50mins/Central Evia)

Just south of Chalkida lies Eretria, an important financial and cultural center in ancient Greece, well-known for its archaeological sites and museum.
