The second floor has 2 double bedrooms with ocean, mountain and banana field views & a bathroom close by. Next to them is a small sun terrace with sunbeds. On the top floor of the house there is an open plan lounge with again ocean and mountain views. The lounge opens onto a second terrace with a barbecue. On the ground floor there is the third double bedroom, a private yard and a new kitchen.
Paul do Mar is still an important fishing harbour with both resident small local boats and larger visiting boats . The village is an important agriculture centre too with fields of bananas terraces of grapes and passion fruit. It's more famous now for the feel-good factor peace and relaxation but, not far away with the NEW roads & tunnels from everything you may need in nearby towns. This means that all can relax, swim and walk in these sunnier and hotter climes all year round!
The village is popular with both walkers and swimmers. It has several safe swimming areas such as the lagoon next to the harbour and the area around the slipway near the Sunny Houses. Besides the ancient walks in and out of the village such as the 'Caminho Real PR19 the only access to the village besides boats until the late 1960's. Paul do Mar is close to other famous mountain and levada walks in Calheta region including the Rabacal UNESCO heritage site LAURISILVA FOREST and Waterfall walks
Attractions include white sand beaches next to Calheta marina 10 minutes drive, a rum factory with a museum, Prazeres village with a 17th century church, SUNDAY fruit and vegetable market and the Jardim Pedagogica including a small zoo, art galleries and a cider house!
PAUL DO MAR is a great base not only for walking but, exploring the other parts of the island with the NEW roads and tunnels
The village has a FOOD SHOP, a Catholic Church, an ATM machine, medical centre, bars/cafes & restaurants. Other popular activities in & around the village are: fishing, swimming, snorkelling & surfing. PAUL DO MAR is flat so its easy to walk everywhere in the village
There are many festivals (FESTAS) particularly over the long Summer. The streets become full of different languages as the emigrants return to their home with their families and friends for a well-earnt holiday!
In Calheta town (10 minutes drive away) is a marina where dolphin-watching, whale-watching and big game fishing boats operate from. Next to the marina are artificial white sand beaches and a shallow lagoon designed for swimming. Not far from Paul do Mar is the international art centre 'Casas das Mudas' perched on cliffs above Calheta marina. It stages performances and exhibitions. Mudas has breathtaking architecture and views. From the town of Ribeira Brava about 25 minutes drive from Paul do Mar there's the fastest easiest access to the North of the island.
