Our stone house in Pitsidia called " O Illios " . It lies on the southern coast of Crete, 65 km below Heraklion was built 8 years ago by a local builder . It therefore has very specific Cretan characteristics . The walls are 40 cm thick and this is both in summer and winter very pleasant .
Pitsidia is an original Cretan village with stunning views of the Psiloritis. Until May you see the snow on the mountain tops , which are 2400 meters high .
The beach is 2 km away and you can walk , cycle , scooter or driving the car to it. It is a wide , clean beach and is very quiet. In South Crete it is about 9 months of summer .
In the house you can stay with up to 5 people . There are two bedrooms , one for 2 people and one for 3 people . Both upstairs and downstairs a bathroom. In the downstairs bathroom , with bath , is also a washing machine . Since 2013 free wifi.
In the well-equipped kitchen you will find electrical appliances, including dishwasher. In the living room is a cozy fireplace which is fired with olive wood. The house has air conditioning .
Around the house you will find four terraces with sun beds / garden furniture is available , so you can always enjoy the outdoors, sunny or sheltered. We are sure that staying in " O Illios " will deliver an unforgettable holiday.
Pitsidia is a small traditional Cretan village near Matala on the south coast of Crete . The accommodations and restaurants are of good quality , and the people are very friendly.
A walk through Pitsidia puts you in the first place on the " platia " . Between the cafe / restaurants / shops you can enjoy one of the terraces , and order a cool drink with some mezes ( savory snacks ) .
You will probably pass the " supermarket " of Kostas . Here they sell absolutely everything . And the two are such nice Pitsidians .
Further on you pass the church that by night is beautifully lit .
In the village you will find also a butcher , good pastry and plenty of small grocery stores and restaurants .
If you return to O Illios in the evening after you've eaten and drunk, feel the friendliness of the people . Kalinichta ( goodnight )
Pitsidia Buses : All buses to Matala go through Pitsidia. In the summer there are six buses a day to Matala , Heraklion , Phaistos and Agia Galini .
Around Pitsidia : You can reach Komos beach on foot in 30 minutes. The neighboring village of Kalamaki is a short walk of 4 km. Matala is 4 km away . Something more in the inland lies the town of Sivas. With a nice walk through the olive fields you can reach it in about half an hour.
WALKING:
So many possibilities to make beautiful walks. Around Pitsidia stretch many olive groves. It's a beautiful sight , the Mount Ida with its snow-capped peaks and down the colors of the flowers . In winter the temperature is typically between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. A beautiful walk is also to nearby Kalamaki , past the first hill you see Kalamaki on the sea, with a clear blue sky above . You can have a cool drink on a terrace and take a snack before you return . Walking through one of the gorges , Samaria ( 18 km ) for the experienced hiker or the Oleander gap with flowering oleanders in April and May ( 9 miles) . The surroundings of Zaros is for walkers very rewarding .
NEARBY ATTRACTIONS :
Phaistos is situated in south-central Crete and will certainly be appreciated by those who love history. You can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view as it is located on a hilltop . Across the street is the excavation Agia Triada . You can buy a combined ticket for both sites . Also you find an excavation near Komos beach still being worked on , it's not open to the public yet. Would you look a little further away than on the road to Heraklion , close to Agia Deka , Gortys , a Roman settlement , is very interesting . And then of course the main excavation of Crete , Knossos , south of Heraklion .
A day of " culture " can not miss in your holidays .
MARKETS :
Mires is a larger town with about 5,000 inhabitants . It lies about 13 km from Pitsidia and you can easily get there by local bus . Every Saturday there is a market. You can also find a post office and several banks . In Timbaki you can also pick up your groceries. The market in Timbaki on Friday morning .
