Pozzomaggiore lies on the Mejlogu plateau. The fertile soil and abundance of water attracted ancient settlers to this area. The countryside is pierced by many caves, including Su Guanu, where Nuraghic pottery has been found, and the Tuvu 'e Mare cave. Close to this are the chamber tombs or domus de janas of Cannas de Cheggia. Moving to the S'Olta 'e Sa Ide locality, you can admire the monumental standing stones or menhirs, tombs of the giants, and several of the island's many ancient stone towers, the nuraghes of Nuraghessu, Cae, Ruggiu and Alvu. Another fascinating sight in the countryside is Ponte Oinu, a Roman arch bridge built on the 3rd century AD across the Mannu river. In town, visit the parish church of San Giorgio, built in the 16th century, and admire its precious carved wood altars. Pozzomaggiore is also a village of proud horsemanship traditions. The horse is the star attraction of most of the traditional festivals held in the village, and it even has a Museo del Cavallo dedicated to it, housed in the former monastery. Visit its fascinating collection of elaborate traditional costumes used for the chief traditional equestrian event: the Ardia di San Costantino. This is the culmination of the village's festive calendar. Held on 6 and 7 July, in front of the charming country church dedicated to San Costantino, it offers a sequence of races and amazing displays of horsemanship.
