Traditional stone-built house, 120 m2, fully renovated in 2009.
Located in the old town of Rethymno, in one of its few quiet and secluded neighborhoods, Grotta’s house is next to the cathedral church, just five minutes away from the beach, close to sightseeing attractions and with easy access to the nightlife action.
It is ideal for families or groups of friends and it can accommodate up to 8 persons. Its location in the centre of the town provides immediate access to the local market. You will be only three minutes away from the nearest supermarket and the taxicab stand and bus stop from where you can head to every spot of the new town and its suburbs.
The space
The house is part of an old Ottoman residence which was built in the mid-18th century. It is built out of river stone and incorporates traditional features of local architecture. It was renovated for residential use with non-toxic, natural materials, successfully balancing traditional elements with a modern minimal approach.
This is a four-storey house. The basement has a small lounge area, a fully-equipped home office and libraries. On this level, you will also find the main bathroom of the house, as well as a laundry room with storage space.
On the first floor, there is the main living room and the kitchen. The couch can be easily converted into a double bed, and there is also a TV and a dining table set for up to 8 persons. The kitchen is fully equipped with all the necessary appliances and utensils to prepare even the most complex meal.
The second floor consists of two levels. On the first level there is a living room with a corner sofa which can be used either as two single beds or easily transformed into a double bed. On the second level you will find a small yet cozy space with a double mattress on a ground mattress base. There is also a second WC with shower. A corridor leads you to the first terrace where you will find a big wooden dining table set for 8 persons.
From here, an external staircase leads to a second terrace on the last floor with magnificent view to the old town’s rooftops. This top floor accommodates a master bedroom with a king-size bed and an additional spacey home office.
Please note that due to its multi-floored structure, the house is not recommended for persons with mobility impairments or for children under the age of 5.
The owners
Our love for Rethymno and its old town was the driving force behind our decision to buy and renovate this house. After having spent wonderful and relaxing moments in it for the last 10 years, we decided it was time to offer it for rental, hoping that our guests will enjoy and cherish it as much as we do. On behalf of the owners, you will be welcomed by Dimitris, who will provide you with all necessary information for a pleasant stay at Grotta’s house.
And to end with, here is a piece of historical trivia: in the past, when streets did not have names, Grotta was how the impasse where the house is situated was called.
