From the owner

The apartment is in a historical building, Castel Terracena, the former Norman residential Palace of Salerno, dating to the end of the 11th century. It was erected by Robert the Guiscard, Norman adventurer who conquered Southern Italy, after having defeated the last Longobard prince of Salerno. Castel Terracena is the original name of the building, of which two towers are still discernible among the later structures added on to its original planning. The two towers are linked by the balcony of apartment, where three original mullioned window of the late 11th century are still to be admired. One if these was discovered in January 1999 thanks to the present owner's passion for Archaeology, as she was born in the vicinity of the Greek temples of Paestum and is fascinated by the Medieval past of Salerno.

The apartment is petite, but perfect for two/three people: it was completely renovated a few years ago, and furnished with the exquisite taste by the present owner. In every room there are pieces in terracotta from Vietri sul Mare, a coastal village near Salerno, famous for its production of ceramics with naive patterns inspired by the Mediterranean landscape. The tiles in the kitchen were specially designed by the Liguori brothers, earthenware artists of Raito (Vietri).

There is a small entrance, a living room with a sofa-bed for two and a beautiful wardrobe (used as cupboard) of the late 18th century, a kitchen with an antique round table, a bathroom with shower and a small bedroom with a French bed (1,30 mt wide). The apartment is about 50 m. square.

The balcony is the most precious corner of the apartment: there you can spend relaxing hours dining at candlelight or drinking a fresh Limoncello.

There is no wi-fi in the apartment, byt you can easily buy a usb device in TIM/VODAFONE/etc. shops that helps you connecting from home, or better visit the many bars that offer free wi-fi in the surroundings.

The apartment is in the historic centre of Salerno, two minute walk from the Romanesque Church of s. Benedict and the Archaeological Museum and one minute walk from the Cathedral, also built by Robert Guiscard. The Diocesan Museum, where the most spectacular cycle of Medieval carved ivory plates is hosted, is round the corner. The apartment is embedded in the oldest street of Salerno, via dei Mercanti, where there are many jewellers and old shops. Within five minutes, you may walk the waterfront, i.e. the promenade along the sea, where there are lots of bars and pizzerias that animate the night life.

From Salerno there are trains, buses, ferry-boats to reach the Amalfi coast, Naples, Pompeii, Cilento regional park, the fabulous archaeological sites of Paestum and Velia. The airport of Naples (Capodichino) is only a 45 min. drive away. If you prefer to use public transports, from the airport you can also take the very frequent Alibus to Naples train station, and from there reach Salerno via train with a 30-40 min journey.

Cleaning services during your stay are available at the price of Eur 10/hour.

Garbage needs to be sorted, as the Municipality collects different items on different weekdays. Please, leave the garbage, in specific plastic bags of different colours and which are at the property, at the main entrance downstairs after h 21.00: Sunday: organic/compostable waste, glass; Monday, paper and cardboard (not dirty pizza containers); Tuesday, organic/compostable waste; Wednesday, plastic, milk containers, and metal; Thursday, mixed household; Friday: organic/compostable waste. If guests fail to comply with this basic house rule, they will incur in a surcharge of Euros 50.

If Gabriela (the owner) agrees, they’ll send you a revised quote outlining the changes. You can review and accept/decline this from the Manage your holiday booking page. You’ll have 48 hours to take action before the revised quote expires.
