La Casa Terracotta is our beautiful 100-year-old, newly-renovated 3-story Italian home. It is 10 mins from the A1 motorway, but set in the mountains, at the very end of a quiet village lane, with stunning views west, south and east to the Appennine mountains. The views, plus its location, facilities and luxury hot tub make it a great place to holiday, whether you simply want to chill out or explore lots of Italy.
Staying here you can experience real Italian village life. Live like a local, eating out much of the time (3 course lunches for 12 euros!) chatting at the village shop when you buy your morning bread, gathering round the table on the top terrace for al fresco dinners.
And yet you are perfectly placed to explore. All the attractions of Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany and the Veneto are between 15 mins and 2 hours drive - from Bologna to Florence, Lucca, Pisa, even Venice and both coasts!
The house has a lovely welcoming feel and we hope it has everything you need for a simple but luxurious stay. Through the arched front door, the entrance hall is furnished with antique tiles. A stone staircase winds up to the 1st and 2nd floors. Solid oak doors lead off on either side to the cosy, living/dining room and to the kitchen with its oak units, brand new induction hob and aged marble work surfaces. There is also a handy downstairs loo.
The well-equipped kitchen includes 2 coffee machines (1 for Lavazza capsules and 1 for fresh ground coffee) a Bosch dishwasher, fridge freezer, pannini maker, and of course plenty of pans, crockery and glasses etc, as well as a breakfast bar for your morning cappucino.
The living room has a large white leather sofa and comfortable armchairs to curl up in and mood lighting for whether you want it dim and romantic or brilliantly lit. The glass dining table, set into the window area with views to the mountains, seats 6, and to keep you entertained inside there is Smart satellite TV with access to Netflix, a DVD player, games and books. You can of course stream your own choice of music and films as WiFi is available throughout the house.
Up to the 1st floor and there is a bright bedroom with a super-king bed that can if requested be split into singles. The room has its own walk-in dressing room area with plenty of storage and a triple-mirrored dressing table.
Across the landing is a family shower room, with sink, bidet and what we think is the best view from a loo in the world!
(Behind the bathroom is a useful utility area with washing machine etc. )
Up again and there are 2 further bedrooms. Bedroom 2 has a king-size bed plus a large en-suite shower room with loo, bidet and sink. Bedroom 3 has another 6-foot bed / 2 singles. Both rooms have wardrobes, mirrors and views to the mountains.
Between the rooms is a small balcony, just big enough for a couple of chairs and a tiny table – great for early morning coffee or a pre-dinner aperitif for two.
Outside, across from the house through your private gate, are wide stone steps leading down to the cantina and terraces. (The cantina has hot water, a food prep area, crockery and a mini fridge, plus a table, and space for towels, sunbeds etc.)
Here you can sunbathe, relax, read, eat, do yoga or T’ai chi all while enjoying the mountains. There is an outdoor dining table, sunbeds, barbecue and solar-powered shower - and of course our luxury Wellis hot tub – great for massaging stiff muscles after a day’s hiking.
The village is located between Bologna and Florence, 10 mins from the A1 motorway. It has a small shop 2 mins walk away, and a bar. There are several good restaurants within 5/10 mins drive. Bologna airport is 35 mins away, Florence an hour, Lucca, Sienna, Pisa - 1.5 hours. Venice and both east and west coasts can be reached in less than two hours. The train station is 10 mins drive, with fast links to Bologna, Florence, Rome, Milan and Venice.
The local scenery is stunning. 15 mins away is the Via Degli Dei with its Roman path remains and the area is crisscrossed with walking trails – mostly steep!
The WW11 Gothic line runs to the north.
There are caves, hot springs, nature reserves and even a 'Turkish' castle all within 20 minutes’ drive.
The restaurant in the next village is renowned across the region.
Bologna is of course the 'food capital' of Italy.
FICO (the largest collection of Italian food producers in the world) is about 30 mins.
It is 20 mins to the Passo Della Futa and 30 to Mugello
Cyclists have very steep mountains!
The designer outlet 'Barberino di Mugello' is about 30 mins.
And after all that, there is the hot tub!
La Casa Terracotta is not just a holiday home. It is our family 'home from home' and equipped as such. We love it and we hope that it will feel like your home and you will love it too.
(Please note that due to the steep steps and an unfenced terrace the house is not suitable for small children or those who struggle with stairs.)
